Dr. Haroon Ullah



Haroon Ullah is a member of the Secretary of State's Policy Planning Staff, where his portfolios include countering violent extremism and public diplomacy. Previously, he served as director of the Community Engagement Office at the U.S. embassy in Pakistan. Dr. Ullah has also worked as a Belfer Fellow at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, focusing on democratization, counterterrorism, and religious political parties in the Middle East and South Asia.

Dr. Haroon K. Ullah serves as Chief Strategy Officer at the Broadcasting Board of Governors, an $800 million global media agency. He is a scholar, diplomat and policy practioner with a special focus on digital strategy, countering violent extremism and transmedia engagement. Haroon has advised three Secretary’s of State, traveled with Ambassador Richard Holbrooke and started the first countering violent extremism office at any US Embassy (US Embassy Islamabad). He teaches at Georgetown University and is a term member of the Council on Foreign Relations. He served as senior Harvard University Belfer Fellow, where he completed his graduate coursework at the Kennedy School of Government and won a Peabody Award for his TV animation Burka Avenger.
